Record-Breaking Growth
Morocco has emerged as the leading supplier of blueberries to the United Kingdom, according to EastFruit. Between July 2024 and June 2025, Moroccan exporters shipped 19,000 tons of blueberries to the UK with a total value of €123.7 million. This represents a year-on-year growth of 44% and a doubling of volume compared to the 2022/23 season — setting a new record.
From Challenger to Market Leader
While the first recorded deliveries of Moroccan blueberries to the UK date back to 2009, the real breakthrough came after Brexit. In 2019/20, Morocco ranked only eighth among UK suppliers. By 2021/22 it had risen to third, in 2022/23 it overtook Spain, and in 2023/24 it nearly matched Peru. Today, Morocco has outpaced all competitors, consolidating its position as the UK’s number one source.
Expanding Global Presence
The UK is now one of Morocco’s most important blueberry markets, alongside Spain and the Netherlands. Morocco’s season runs from December to June, with peak volumes in April. During this period, Morocco’s berries dominated the UK market, accounting for over 50% of imports in March and May, and reaching as high as 75% in April. Globally, Morocco has climbed to fourth place among exporters, with production expanding into new regions to serve both Europe and emerging markets in Asia and the Middle East.
Consumer Demand Driving Growth
The surge in UK imports reflects growing consumer demand for fresh and healthy products. While most major suppliers increased shipments this season, Morocco achieved by far the strongest growth. Moroccan blueberries represented nearly 25% of total UK imports, strengthening the country’s reputation as a reliable supplier with favorable climate, logistics, and competitive costs.
Conclusion – Morocco as a Global Player
In just fifteen years, Morocco has transformed from a minor exporter of 636 tons in 2009 to a powerhouse shipping 83,000 tons in 2024. This rise reflects more than just favorable weather: it is the product of strategic planning, investment, and integration into global supply chains. With further expansion underway, Morocco’s blueberry sector is not only shaping the UK market but positioning the Kingdom as a world-class player in agri-business.
